Solidarity in Action: BSU Students Support "upstairs"

The Vocational School (BSU) in Taunusstein offers a wide range of educational pathways in various fields and fosters not only its students’ technical skills but also their social skills. Class 10B, specializing in office management, provided an impressive example of this during their ethics class under the guidance of their homeroom teacher, Ms. Ehrengart: a creative and dedicated fundraising campaign to benefit the EVIM youth assistance project “upstairs.”

The idea originated in class, but it quickly became a cause close to the hearts of the entire school community. The students drafted a fundraising appeal that was distributed throughout the school. Their approach was particularly creative: instead of simply asking for money, the students collected returnable bottles. Teachers were also able to participate in the campaign in the teachers’ lounge. Thanks to this sustainable approach, as well as direct monetary donations, an impressive amount was raised.

With the money collected, 50 Christmas-themed gift bags were put together, filled with hygiene products and everyday essentials. The handover of these surprise bags took place in December at the Lilien-Carré in Wiesbaden. Present were seven students, their teacher, Trucy Vo (director of the upstairs-Mobil), and Dieter Nühlen (fundraising coordinator at EVIM). Before the handover, there was a very interesting exchange among all those involved. Afterward, the 50 bags were loaded into the car together to be distributed to young people in need.

Ms. Ehrengart emphasized how proud she was of her class. She said that it was a wonderful class with a strong sense of unity and that it was precisely this unity that had helped make the project such a success.

What’s particularly nice about this initiative is the story behind it: The connection was made through a colleague at the school who knows a former staff member of the “upstairs” project. That’s how the idea was born to specifically support the project with a donation.

This initiative impressively demonstrates how important social engagement is even during one’s school years. A huge thank you to the students of Class 10B, Ms. Ehrengart, and the entire BSU Taunusstein for their wonderful support! (dn)
