Equal opportunities at the start of school

Not all children find the transition from kindergarten to elementary school easy. Some need additional support to help them settle in from their first day at school. This is provided by the "Equal Opportunities at School Start" project, which is funded exclusively by donations.
 

What we do

We support first graders in their transition from kindergarten to elementary school and work to counteract disadvantages in order to even out differences. In consultation with teachers, we determine the individual needs of the children and offer targeted support. Using a wide range of methods, we teach learning content both in class and in individual settings. We pay attention to the entire class to avoid (self-)stigmatization and flexibly adapt our concept through continuous evaluation.  

 

 

These are our goals

  • We work preventively by empowering children to stand up for themselves.

  • We strengthen individual skills, such as bonding, communication, and perception abilities.

  • We close learning gaps so that the joy of learning can unfold.

  • Together with the children, we discover their personal resources and individual potential.

  • We teach social skills in an appreciative manner, such as accepting boundaries, mediating disputes, making amends, and sharing joy.

  • We try to make the transition to second grade possible without further support and, in the best case, lay the foundation for a positive school career.

  • We make self-efficacy tangible.

Financing

Equal opportunities require joint commitment to enable everyone to participate fairly in education. In 2009, the concept of "equal opportunities at the start of school" was launched by Ambulante Hilfen Mainz, part of EVIM Jugendhilfe, in collaboration with the Mainz Community Foundation. Thanks to the support of the Mainz Community Foundation, our project work is still possible today. In order to continue to provide disadvantaged children with access to education, we are dependent on additional donors.

To support two children for one school year with 225 hours of student assistance, €6,750 is needed. This financial budget covers all other services of the project, such as team coordination by an educational specialist, pedagogically guided team meetings of the school assistants, case discussions, report writing, exchange with all network partners involved in the project, and administrative and organizational work processes.

The entire project is financed primarily by donations.
